News Articles for 2015

At the forthcoming Annual Meeting several members of the Exec will be retiring:- President Marian Purdy, Hon Secretary Helen Mines, County Training Officer Cathy Armstrong, Seniors' Captain Teddy Bevan and Second Team Captain Denise Goodacre.

Teddy Bevan (Lambourne) will be taking over as County President and Sue Ashworth (Woburn) has accepted the nomination of Vice-Captain, assuming the role of County Captain in twelve month's time.

Liz Keens (Gerrards Cross) will be the new Seniors’ Captain and Janette Psyllides (Gerrards Cross) will become the Second Team Captain.

Unfortunately there have been no applications for the post of Hon. Secretary. All delegates were asked at the recent Delegates' Meeting to consider if there is anyone at their club who would be willing to take on the role. Although Helen will be stepping down from the post she has kindly offered to continue to draft the Handbook and to organise the County Lunch, which will scale down the Secretary’s job considerably. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the position please contact Helen for details:- helen_mines@btinternet.com

The role of County Training Officer:
There will be no-one filling the vacancy following the retirement of Cathy Armstrong as County Training Officer. This year the Exec have decided to trial a new position of County Coaching Officer who will not be a member of the Exec, but will report to the Exec and be invited to attend the Exec meetings as necessary. The Exec have asked Tony Bowers to fill this position and he has accepted the role. Tony is a PGA Coach and will be the new County Coaching Officer.

Women’s teams target county crown

Six teams will go head to head next week when they contest the final of the women’s English County Championship at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire.

The grand finale brings together Buckinghamshire from Midlands South, Essex from the East, Gloucestershire from the South West; Lancashire from the North; Nottinghamshire from Midlands North; and Sussex from the South.

They will play off in a five-day round-robin, starting on Monday, September 14, and four of the teams will be seeking their first win.

Only Lancashire, who have been champions 10 times, and Essex, the three-times title-holders, have previously been successful.

Muse, fellow Lancashire player Sophie Lamb, and Gloucestershire’s Bethan Popel are all representing England in this week’s women’s Home Internationals.

The Essex team includes the English U14 champion Lily Humphreys, while senior international Katherine Russell is in the Sussex side, alongside Aileen Greenfield, the runner-up in the English senior women’s stroke play championship.

The Finals' Day of the Bucks Shield was held at The Buckinghamshire on Friday 11th September.  The course was in great condition and the matches were played in glorious sunshine.  The morning semi-finals were very close matches, going all the way to the last match:-

After a quick turn round the afternoon final saw Stoke Park defeat Burnham Beeches to win the Shield for the third year in a row.

Many of you will have heard the sad news that Mentmore has ceased trading.  As a result of this the BCLGA resolved to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting to be carried out by email, proposing the resolution to change the Constitution to allow a period of grace to allow members to continue playing county events if their club ceases trading.  This will mean that members can continue playing the county competitions, although any Home venues will be changed to Away fixtures.

Whilst this is the first time that the BCLGA Executive has had to deal with a situation such as this, it is possible that any number of clubs in Bucks may face a similar situation in the future.  The Exec feels that this proposal will give members of the clubs involved a period of grace during the period of uncertainty.

Notice of BCLGA Extraordinary General Meeting:

On Wednesday 17th June 2015 the BCLGA Executive called an Extraordinary General Meeting to be conducted by email, to consider the following proposal to amend the Constitution by adding:-

The members of any Club that ceases trading will be allowed to continue to play in BCLGA competitions for a period of 3 months or until the end of the current round of summer/winter competitions, whichever is the later.”

Each Club Delegate, as the Voting Member of the Club, was asked to consult with the committee and members of their Club and send their vote on the above proposal to Helen Mines, BCLGA Hon. Secretary  by Saturday 4 July 2015.

Response to the Proposal:

59% of clubs sent a reply to the proposal.
Of those who sent a reply 92% voted in favour of the proposal.
The motion to amend the Constitution was thereby passed.

-  Chanel Fontaine-Geary (Woburn) who played in the US Kids European Championship at Gullane (72 holes over 3 days 26th-28th May) & finished 7th. The top 10 players qualify to go to the World Championship at Pinehurst, USA (30th July -1st August).

-  Similarly, to Thalia Kirby (Stoke Park) who qualified in her age group & is also off to the US Kids World Championships at Pinehurst.

-  And to Megan Dennis who became the Ladies Club Champion at Woburn GC last weekend.

The Summer Meeting at Woburn on Wednesday 5th August has been oversubscribed and there are several entries on the waiting list.

Woburn are kindly trying to accommodate more tee times for the event. The club is unable to commit until early July - once a definitive decision has been received the individuals named on the Entry Forms on the waiting list will be contacted.

The County Captain, Phillipa Cook, is delghted to announce that Teddy Bevan is the BCLGA President Elect.

England Golf are supporting National Golf Month May 2015.

NGM May 2015 targets getting 100,000 lapsed golfers and new lady golfers playing golf.  Offers during the month will include:

• Men’s Get Golfing Coaching Programmes
• Ladies Get Golfing Coaching Programmes
• Meet the Golf Club & Play My Golf Course Deals
• Golf Club Open Days

The following article is taken from the England Golf website:-

National Golf Month tees off in May with hundreds of free coaching opportunities across the UK aiming to encourage more than 100,000 people to give golf a go for the first time.

This year there is a special focus on encouraging more women to try golf – and 2015 European Solheim Cup Captain Carin Koch will join Kate Hoey MP, the Mayor’s Commissioner for Sport in London and the former Minister for Sport, to launch the participation drive.

The month-long campaign tees off at Wimbledon Common Golf Club on Thursday, April 30 where Carin Koch will play a nine-hole exhibition match at 11am. The club, which until 2005 was all-male, now has a thriving women’s section and a successful ladies' academy, which introduces and mentors new female golfers.

Market research commissioned in 2014 by Syngenta, a golf course turfcare specialist, revealed that 5% of women in the UK already participating in at least one other sport or activity would be ‘very interested’ in taking up golf, equating to a potential 640,000 new female golfers. Spending time with family and friends, socialising outdoors and stress relief are the key factors that appeal to women about golf.

The research also showed that prospective new players are looking for accessible and affordable coaching opportunities, which National Golf Month is aiming to deliver throughout May.

“Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by men and women, boys and girls, and is a wonderful game for life,” said Carin Koch, an ambassador for Syngenta, which is supporting National Golf Month.

“I started golf when I was young and now, as a mum to two children, we enjoy playing golf as a family. Golf is a healthy, social, outdoor sport and I’d encourage women to get together with friends and family and take part in one of the many National Golf Month free taster sessions and experience for themselves what a fun game golf is.”

Doug Poole, founder of National Golf Month, said: “What has happened at Wimbledon Common Golf Club is a great example of how golf is evolving in the UK. The ladies' academy is introducing women of all ages and from different walks of life to golf and it’s great to see how, through the coaching and mentoring programme, new players are developing from starters to regular golfers.

Below is an araticle posted on the England Golf website on 20th February:-

Joint Statement from the Ladies’ Golf Union and The R&A

Exploratory discussions are underway between the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and The R&A towards establishing a more closely coordinated working relationship and the possibility of a merger between the two organisations.

There is a great deal of synergy between the LGU and The R&A, with both based in St Andrews and responsible for staging Major Championships, prestigious amateur events and international matches.

Both organisations are committed to supporting the development of golf and encouraging participation in the sport.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

Below is an article published on 15th February on the England Golf website:-

Northamptonshire makes history with golf merger

The golfers of Northamptonshire have become the first in the country to vote to merge their ladies’ and men’s county organisations.

At two separate, simultaneous meetings, the men of the Northamptonshire Golf Union and the women of the Northamptonshire Ladies’ County Golf Association both unanimously agreed to take the historic step, which has been welcomed by England Golf.

The two governing bodies are merging into a new company – Northamptonshire Golf Ltd – to be run by a board of directors of either gender elected on the basis of “the best person for the job”.

David Foley, President of the Northamptonshire Golf Union, commented: “This is a fantastic outcome following months of work by the men and women of the respective county committees.

“We have demonstrated we can work together in a harmonious and effective manner. We are all looking forward to the challenges ahead and are excited by the new opportunities this merger offers us.  The future of golf in Northamptonshire is very bright.”

Mary MacLaren, County Captain of the Northamptonshire Ladies’ County Golf Association, remarked:  “This is a very exciting time for Northamptonshire Golf – the task that lies ahead is both challenging and inspiring and I am confident that we will be able to enhance the business, sporting and playing opportunities within our county.”

The county organisations were supported throughout the merger process by England Golf and David Foley added: “We’d like to thank England Golf for the support we have received, it’s been brilliant.”

David Joy, the Chief Executive of England Golf, welcomed the merger and said: “We are delighted that this merger process has now been completed. All of those involved in Northamptonshire are to be congratulated on the drive and vision they have shown in trailblazing to become the first merged county.

“I am sure this will prove to be a very positive step in further strengthening golf in the county and it is another important milestone in the modernisation of England Golf.

“There are several other counties actively engaged in merger discussions and this success in Northamptonshire will, I am sure, encourage other counties to explore the many benefits of a merged county golf organisation.”

In Northamptonshire, the benefits which are envisaged include streamlining administration and the production and implementation of a co-ordinated plan for golf development in the county. Importantly, there will be one organisation representing Northamptonshire golf at local and national level.

The Annual County Lunch takes place next Wednesday, 4th March at Woburn Golf Club.  As part of the fundraising at the event there will be a silent auction of Four Ball Vouchers, which have been kindly donated by clubs across the county.

A PDF schedule of the vouchers on offer can be downloaded:-  Click Here

Bids are welcomed in advance for any of the vouchers.  If you are not going to be at the Lunch and would like to place a bid, please send the details to Phillipa Cook :-   pjcook6@gmail.com

Below is an article on the England Golf website following the announcement on 3rd February that The Open will be broadcast on Sky TV from 2017:-

England Golf has welcomed the announcement by the R&A, that The Open will be broadcast on both the BBC and Sky from 2017, knowing that the R&A will have taken this decision after full and careful consideration and in the best interests of golf right across Great Britain and Ireland.

The new arrangements will see highlight programmes broadcast on primetime BBC as well as extensive coverage on Sky.

England Golf recognises that this change after a period of 60 years, will cause unease in some quarters, particularly for those who feel that the loss of full coverage on free to air TV will impact negatively on participation numbers.

Participation in golf and club membership numbers have both been in a steady decline for the past decade and the direct correlation between the broadcast of The Open on BBC and an increase in demand for golf has not been proven. England Golf recognises the complexity in increasing participation and club membership and considers that new broadcast arrangements and the new funds which will be made available from 2017, can have a bigger impact on the growth of the game throughout England.

England Golf has recently launched its new strategy which aims to increase the regular participation in golf and halt the decline in club membership by 2017. The England Golf Partnership will also soon release the findings of the recent Portas Review, which examined the demand for golf and made clear recommendations for the growth of the game in England.

The R&A have made a commitment to investing new and additional funds in the development of the game across Great Britain and Ireland and England Golf now looks forward to discussions with the R&A over the next few months.

For more information please read an Open Letter from Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A.
