Hazlemere Captain

From 200 nominations Gilly Stimpson, Lady Captain of Hazlemere, won the Lady Captain of the Year 2014 award, which is run by Surprize Golf and Women & Golf Magazine.  Over the summer the Lady Captains competition was held - an overwhelming amount of votes were cast and some lovely reasons given for voting, which really highlighted how appreciated Lady Captains are.

Gilly took on the role of Lady Captain at short notice for the second time in 3 years and is a very worthy winner. There was a surprise visit by Christina Smith of Surprize Golf who turned up at a ladies presentation evening at Hazlemere on 16th October and made the announcement that Gilly had been chosen by a panel as the winner of this year’s prize.

Well done Gilly!  An article about the award should soon be appearing in Women & Golf Magazine.

Mid South Junior Winning Team

Well done to the Junior team on winning the Midlands South Team Finals on Sunday, 7th September at Stratford Oaks Golf Club, Warwickshire.  Representing Berks, Bucks and Oxon they played Worcesteshire & Herefordshire, the team playing for the three northern counties of the region.

In glorious sunshine the Bucks girls won this scratch match 4 – 2, to retain the trophy.  An impressive 7/6 win by Shamiso Hatchard was followed by wins from Charlotte West, Luan Skeates & Alice Kozlowski.

Very few matches have still to be played in the two Summer Leagues:

There are a few outstanding matches in the Premier Division and Division 1.

In Division 3 Burnham Beeches topped the table with Hazlemere as runners up.

Division 4 has concluded with The Buckinghamshire finishing in top spot with Chiltern Forest finishing in second place.

Buckingham and Hazlemere have tied at the top of the First Division. After count back an outright winner cannot be determined and so they share the position of League winners.

In the other Divisions:
-  Division 2:  Lambourne winners, Beaconsfield runners-up
-  Division 3:  Harewood Downs winners, Wexham Park runners-up (on count back from Harleyford)
-  Division 4:  Whiteleaf winners, Chiltern Forest runners-up
-  Division 5:  matches not completed but Magnolia Park cannot be beaten

Well done to Carolyn Howell and Anna Short who have played their way through to the finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes as representatives of Woburn.

The Daily Mail Foursomes is regarded as "the greatest amateur golfing event in the world with more than 190,000 players competing in their club qualifying rounds".  Entry is open to members of golf clubs in England, Scotland and Wales, with each club invited to enter one men's pair and one women's pair in the championships.

Carolyn and Anna won their Round 7 match 4 & 3 against the representatives from Girton Golf Club, Cambridge.  This was the last round before this year's Finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes which will be held at Marriott Dalmahoy, Edinburgh between Sunday 12th and Tuesday 14th October 2014. The final 16 teams attend this event, which is round 8 of the competition.

The BCLGA wish former County Captain, Carolyn and Anna the very best of luck in Scotland.

The qualifier from each affiliated club was eligible to compete in the England Golf Regional Medal Finals.  There were 120 places available in each of these Regional Medal Finals, which consisted of 18 holes of stroke play.

The Midlands South Final was played at Tadmarton Heath on 13th May. As previously reported in an earlier "Latest News" item, the qualifiers from the Midlands South Division included four Bucks players: -  Charlotte Nutt (Beaconsfield) as top regional qualifier -  Ji-Young Kim (Flackwell Heath)  -  Jenny Gibson (Woburn) -  Susan Harrison (Harewood Downs)

The England Golf Grand Medal Final was held last Saturday, 28th June at Peterborough MIlton Golf Club and consisted of 18 holes of stroke play. This handicap competition played over one day saw 60 finalists (10 from each of the 6 Regional Finals) compete to find the country's leading handicap golfer.

The winner returning the lowest nett score over the 18 holes was Lema Townsend (Overstone Park) with a score of 67, three better than her nearest rival.  The winner's playing partner was Jenny Gibson (Woburn) who finished in 13th place with a score of nett 74. On the same score, finishing in 15th place was Beaconsfield's Charlotte Nutt in 15th place - a great result having travelled there direct from County Week!
The othe Bucks scores were:- in 40th place, Susan Harrison (Harewood Downs) with a nett 80, and finishing in 47th place, Ji-Young Kim (Flackwell Heath) with a score of nett 82.

Immediately after the trophy presentation at County Week County Captain, Karen Platt was pleased to announce that two of the squad had gained their County Colours:-  Shamiso Hatchard (Woburn) and Charlotte Nutt (Beaconsfield).

The criteria used for awarding colours is: -  Must have played for the First team during County Match Week for two years -  Must have acquired 6 points from County Match Week matches (1 point for singles, ½ for foursomes)  -  Must have shown adequate commitment to the training days -  Must have shown support to her team members The final decision is made by the County Captain and Selectors, in consultation with the County Training Officer.

Friday’s fifth and final day was a thrilling climax to this year’s County Week, with the weather playing its part in the drama of the day. The conditions of the course had changed as a result of heavy overnight rain.  The last of the morning games were completed in more rain, but worse was to come in the afternoon.
Just as the first two county singles matches were concluded the klaxon sounded, resulting in a suspension of play. The thunderstorm and torrential rain halted play for almost an hour. When the six Bucks v Berks matches resumed the position was clear. Bucks must come away with a Win, a Halved match with Berks would not be enough - Northants had won their match and would have the same number of points as Bucks, but would win on count-back.

The morning foursomes had given Berks a 2 - 1 advantage and so four of the six singles matches had to be won for Bucks to take the title.  Clara Leathers (Ellesborough) in her eleventh County Week had lead out the team and produced the first point with a 3 & 2 win. This was followed by a half point from Megan Dennis (Woburn) who battled hard to halve her match. Victoria Bryan (Lambourne) had a great 3 & 2 victory, which meant that Bucks needed one and a half more points to secure victory.
Next to finish was Denise Goodacre (Lambourne) who lost her match, having had the misfortune to play the star of the Berks team who had won all but one of her matches during the week. Meanwhile Shamiso Hatchard (Woburn) continued her great form and had a 5& 4 win.
One more match still on the course and half a point still required!
At the suspension in play Charlotte Nutt (Beaconsfield) was 1 down. The break came at just the right time – Charlotte by her own admission, re-grouped and resumed play feeling much better about her game. After watching the excitement of the conclusion of the earlier matches, the army of red were relieved to hear that coming down the 15th Charlotte had turned her deficit into a lead, and went to the 16th leading 3 Up – thus Charlotte had secured at least the half point.  She then hit a tremendous tee shot on the panoramic par 3 to two foot from the pin – finishing the hole was a mere formality, her 3 & 2 win gaining rapturous applause from the Bucks supporters.
As regional winners the Bucks team will now represent the Midlands South Region in the County Finals, which are being held in the East Midlands at Belton Park Golf Club, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, from 15th to 19th September.
Well done to County Captain, Karen Platt for masterminding the whole week and for leading her team to victory.
The full results can be found in the “County Week 2014” section.

Day four was a tremendous day for Bucks at County Week. With victory against Worcestershire & Herefordshire the team went into the lead with one day to go.  From an almost impossible position the morning foursomes matches turned almost inevitable defeat into a 2½ -½ lead. With one match at 5 down and another 3 down, the players battled hard to earn the commanding lead at lunch-time.

All the afternoon singles were close matches, except for the fifth match which saw Chloe Li (Woburn) have a convincing 4-3 win. Beth Scott (Stoke Park) gained her first County Week singles win, and with Charlotte West (Beaconsfield/ Harewood Downs) halving her match, Bucks beat Worcestershire & Herefordshire to go to the top of the table.

In the other matches on Thursday:

Northants beat Warwickshire (8 -1)
Berkshire beat Oxfordshire (5 - 4)

For full details of all the results, go to the "County Week 2014" section.

Another great performance by the Bucks team on Day 3 of County Week.

The oppponents for the day were Oxfordshire.  There were comfortable victories for Bucks in the first two foursomes matches. The third match was a much closer affair, losing on the 18th. And so it was 2-1in our favour at the end of the foursomes.

Megan Dennis (Woburn) had a resounding victory, 6 - 5 in the singles. The other five games were much closer.  Charlotte West (Beaconsfield / Harewood Downs) had a great birdie on the last hole to secure her point.  The lead kept changing in Chloe Li 's (Woburn) match but a birdie on the 17th secured her first point for Bucks in County Week singles.  Charlotte Nutt's form continued to impress and she won her match on the 18th.

In the other two games Warwickshire beat Berkshire (5 - 4) and Worcester & Hereford beat Northants (6 - 3).

With two days to go, Worcestershire & Hereford top the table with 2½ points and Bucks lie in second place with 2 points - these two teams go head to head in tomorrow's matches!

For all details of County Week, go to the "County Week 2014" section of the website.

The second day of County Week saw the Bucks team bounce back from their defeat on the first day to beat Warwickshire, last year's winners of the Midlands South Region County Week, 6 - 3.
A strong performance in the morning foursomes gave Bucks a 2 - 1 lead at lunch-time.  Charlotte Nutt (Beaconsfield) led out the singles matches and had an emphatic 4 & 3 win against the 2014 Warwickshire County Champion. Clara Leathers (Ellesborough) had a similar victory and was followed by Charlotte West (Harewood Downs / Beaconsfield) winning her match 3 & 2.
Victoria Bryan (Lambourne) showed tremendous spirit to fight back from being 5 down, taking the match to the 16th hole.  Megan Dennis (Woburn) played some fantastic golf, taking her game to the 18th, narrowly losing her match on the last putt.  Shamiso Hatchard (Woburn) chalked up her third win of the week by coming from behind, to win on the 18th, having had a birdie at the tricky 17th hole to go 1 up going into the last.

Both the other matches were drawn:-

Worcestershire & Herefordshire 4½ - 4½ Oxfordshire Northamptonshire 4½ - 4½ Berkshire
For the full results and the match schedule, go to the "County Week 2014" section of the website.

The first day of County Week began on a glorious sunny day and sun hats and sun cream were the order of the day.  The Bucks team were up against the host county, Northants.  Despite playing some great golf, the morning foursomes left Bucks trailing by ½ - 2½.
The Northants team were equally as dominant in the afternoon singles, winning four of the six matches to give them victory by 6½ - 2½.  Well done to Shamiso Hatchard (Woburn) who had a commanding win against the current Northants County Champion. With two of our matches still to complete, a thunder storm brought a suspension to play. On resumption Alice Kozlowski (Ellesborough) fought hard to win her match on the eighteenth.
The other two later matches were more affected by the storm and play continued through into the evening. The results were:
-  Worcs/Herford beat Berkshire (5 - 4)

-  Oxfordshire beat Warwickshire (6 - 3)
The full results and match schedule can be found in the "County Week 2014" section of the website.
Tuesday's matches are:-

Well done to Charlotte West on her victory in a WPGA event.  The following article was publshed on the England Golf website on 30th May:-

England teenager Charlotte West wins WPGA event

England U16 squad player Charlotte West beat a professional field at Chestfield, Kent, to win the latest event on the WPGA One Day Series.

The 16-year-old was the only amateur in the field and she shot level par 71, pipping Catherine Panton-Lewis of The Berkshire on countback to win the trophy.
Charlotte from Harewood Downs in Buckinghamshire, said afterwards: “It’s a shock really, it hasn’t sunk in yet! I played steady, kept my head down and focussed on what I was doing.”
The WPGA has opened up entry to its popular One Day Series to U16 and U18 girls from England Golf’s regional squads to give them the chance to develop their skills in a tournament arena.
Rebecca Wood, the England Golf Women’s Performance Manager, said: “This is a fabulous result for Charlotte, the lone amateur in the field. England Golf are very proud of the players who are taking up these opportunities to test themselves against professionals and delighted about the results so far.”
Three squad players have already claimed runners-up places in the first two events of the series. Bel Wardle, 14, from Prestbury, set an amateur course record and was second in the first event at Dunham Forest, Cheshire. Cloe Frankish, 15, from Chart Hills in Kent, and Aimee Wilson, 18, from Mickleover in Derbyshire, were in a three-way tie for second place at Little Aston.
Charlotte, a past Buckinghamshire champion who trains with England Golf’s Thames Valley Squad, had already played in one event before teeing up at Chestfield and, although she didn’t figure at Dunham Forest, it gave her the determination to do better. “I wanted to prove to myself that I could play well in competitions like this,” she said.
She set about doing just that at Chestfield with a round which included four birdies, balanced by four bogeys, and among the highlights was a chip-in for two on the short fourth. She reached the turn in level par and, although she dropped shots on 10 and 11, she got them back with birdies on 13 and 15. Her level par back nine gave her the edge in the countback for first place.
Charlotte, who is currently taking GCSEs, reckons her squad training has improved her golf: “It’s helped me to think about and understand my game and I know the areas to work on,” she said.
She’s also learned from playing alongside the WPGA professionals. “They manage to get themselves out of trouble and their course management is good,” she said.

Congratulations to Gemma Dryburgh and Annabel Dimmock on their selection for this year's Curtis Cup team.  Gemma (Scotland) is a member of Beaconsfield and a current Bucks player, while Annabel (England) played for Bucks in her former years until she moved to Surrey when she became a member of Wentworth.
The following announcement was posted on the LGU website on 6th May:-

There are six newcomers to the Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup line-up for the 38th transatlantic international contest against the United States at St Louis Country Club, Missouri from June 6 to 8, 2014.  Only two of the winning team at Nairn in June 2012, Stephanie Meadow and Bronte Law, both students at United States colleges, are in the eight-strong line-up this time round.  For Annabel Dimmock, Georgia Hall, Gabriella Cowley, Charlotte Thomas, Eilidh Briggs and Gemma Dryburgh, it will be a completely new experience.
For the first time in the long history of this biennial match, first played at Wentworth in 1932, the GB & I team has been partially chosen through the World Amateur Golf Ranking TM and the LGU Order of Merit.  Dimmock, Hall, Law and Meadow are the leading four eligible players in the WAGRTM  and Briggs and Cowley are selected via the LGU Order of Merit table.  The LGU Selection Panel's two choices of Dryburgh and Thomas complete the team of eight.
The team will again be captained by Tegwen Matthews who said “I am thrilled and excited with this team and genuinely believe it has the perfect mix to retain the Curtis Cup. Each and every member of this team has fought hard for their place and I know they all have the desire, talent and passion to bring the cup back home.”
Anna Hubbard will return as Team Manager.
GB & I's victory at Nairn in 2012 halted a run of seven consecutive victories by the United States.  The Nairn contest, which GB & I won by a single point over three days, was the closest since a 9-9 draw in 1994 at the Honors Course, Chattanooga in Tennessee. May is National Golf Month, an initiative driven by the British Golf Industry Association (BGIA) and Bauer Media that gives golf clubs the opportunity to promote offers through the National Golf Month website that will target both lapsed and new golfers.

Clubs have been given the opportunity to log onto the National Golf Month website in order to add their club's events and offers to the website.

England Golf are supporting National Golf Month May 2014 through the Get into golf campaign at www.getintogolf.org and have encouraged all clubs to consider taking part in this exciting project. Offersthat clubs may will be promoting through the National Golf Month website include:

  • Get back into golf initiatives such as coaching programmes, playing and membership deals
  • Get into golf/Play more golf initiatives to encourage new or lapsed golfers to continue playing through structured coaching, playing and membership offers
  • Coaching experiences to promote specific coaching programmes delivered by PGA professionals

National Golf Month is an excellent example of how clubs, counties and England Golf together can begin to address the decline in club membership.  The initiative has the backing of golf supremos such as Sir Nick Faldo, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington and young teenage sensation Charley Hull.

How BCLGA Members can help with this initiative:-

If you know of anyone who is thinking of either taking up the game or getting back into golf after a lay-off, do let them know about National Golf Month.  It may be that your own club is participating in this scheme but if not, during the month of May across the UK there are thousands of great deals and discounts to get people playing the game that we all enjoy.

Please refer anyone interested to the National Golf Month website - from there it is easy to choose a programme that will fit their requirements and to book a place:-  www.nationalgolfmonth.com

Congratulations to Carole Weir from Beaconsfield on winning the Flight 2 match play of the English Senior Women's Amateur Championships, which were held at Sandy Lodge Golf Club, near Watford, from 22nd to 25th April.  In the final Carole defeated Cheshire’s Caroline Berry (Bromborough) 3/2 - the match was a re-run of the 2010 championship final, which Caroline won.  Having played the 16 holes in level par Carole was delighted to re-write the result.
The report on the England Golf website quotes Carole saying “It was nice to play well” and, paying tribute to her husband and caddy, Melvin “He sorted me out! He told me I was taking too long over the shot and to stand there and whack it – and to keep still on the putts.”  Carole retired last year as a Buckinghamshire county player - she was previously the Middlesex champion.
Nine ladies from Bucks played in the event. Christine Watson (Beaconsfield) finished the 36 hole qualifying round in 13th position and played in the Championship Flight match play where she was knocked out by Lulu Housman (Highgate).  Denise Goodacre (Lambourne) qualified for Flight 2 in 32nd place - she was beaten by Carole Weir in the quarter final 2/1.

Julie Brown from Trentham Golf Club is the new English senior women’s champio. Having qualified as top seed she completed a fairytale debut with a 2/1 win in the final over past winner Chris Quinn. Julie is a former winner on the Ladies European Tour and is the current Staffordshire CJO.

The full report and results of the Championships can be found on the England Golf website:-    www.englandgolf.org

Congratulations to the Denham pair, Dot Kelleher and Nicky Ewart, on winning the Winter Foursomes knockout competition.

The final was held at Beaconsfield Golf Club on Wednesday 2nd April between Dot & Nicky and Bernie Howe & Elaine Harrison from Buckingham.

There was some excellent golf played by all four players. On the 6 th hole, a par 5, Nicky sank a very long putt for a birdie to go 3 up.  Janet Beal was there as referee, but as the match was played in such good spirits, her expertise wasn’t needed.

A number of spectators came along to watch, and support, including the County President, Marian Purdy who presented the prizes, with Dot & Nicky winning on the 15th, by 4 & 3.

Thank you to Beaconsfield Golf Club for allowing us courtesy of their course for the final.

The County Lunch was held on Wednesday 5th March in the Fountain Room at Stoke Park Golf Club. A capacity 125 ladies from clubs across the county enjoyed a delicious three course meal.  A brain-teasing quiz and crossword kept everyone entertained during the breaks between each course.
Sue Barnes, Community Fundraiser for the County Captain's charity gave a short talk on the work of Helen & Douglas House. There are two houses in Oxford giving respite/emergency/end-of-life care on a 1 to 1 basis.  Helen House with 8 beds was the world's first children's hospice, opening in November 1982 and Douglas House with 7 beds, opened in February 2004 as the world's first hospice specifically for young adults. Helen House is undergoing major refurbishment - a further £1m has to be raised to complete the work, in addition to the anual running costs of £5m. 15% only is received from statutory funding.

At the end of the lunch Karen Platt presented Sue Barnes with a cheque for £4878, which included the proceeds from last year's Summer Eclectic Competition and the magificent sum of £2530 raised from the lunch itself. Many thanks to the clubs that donated the prizes for the raffle, which raised £765 and the 4 Ball Vouchers, which raised £1695 in the silent auction.

Thank you to Stoke Park for hosting a most enjoyable occasion and to Helen Mines for co-ordinating the arrangements for the lunch.

The following announcement has been made by England Golf:-

" England Golf, along with the other Home Unions is pleased to announce its support for a major new initiative to get more people playing more often, more people returning back to golf and ultimately attracting more golf club members to your facility.
National Golf Month (NGM) will take place in May 2014. It is an initiative driven by the British Golf Industry Association (BGIA) and Bauer Media and is supported by many of the major golfing associations and companies in Britain.
The NGM concept is to co-ordinate a national marketing campaign to promote golf through Bauer Media’s portfolio of publications and radio stations to reach an estimated audience of 23.7 million people and to engage as many national and local stakeholders as possible to support the campaign to promote a variety of golfing opportunities at a local level.
All golf clubs will have an opportunity to be involved in joining a structured national marketing campaign. The main objectives of this initiative are in line with the emerging direction of England Golf’s strategic plan 2014 to 2017 and fit with the priorities that golf clubs have already highlighted as part of the consultation process.
NGM will target both lapsed and new golfers and will help drive more business to golf clubs. The main types of offers that golf clubs may wish to promote through the online system are as follows:

  • Get back into golf – to promote opportunities targeted at lapsed golfers such as coaching programmes, playing, membership and other special offers.
  • Get into golf/Play more golf – to promote new and follow on opportunities for participants to continue playing through structured coaching, playing and membership offers.
  • Coaching experiences – to promote specific offers and coaching programmes delivered by PGA professionals.
  • Golf club open days – to promote specific open days and taster sessions.

Activities should take place in May 2014 and you may wish to offer a number of opportunities throughout the month or on specific dates. Further information will be sent out to all affiliated golf clubs that details the process of inputting your offers on the online system and what support you will receive.
You may be aware that England Golf, with its partners the PGA and Golf Foundation already operate www.getintogolf.org, which promotes golf club offers in conjunction with the ‘Get into golf’ national marketing campaign and this facility is available for clubs throughout the year. For more information on this please contact info@getintogolf.org.

Whether your golf club is seeking new members or more visitors you may wish to consider becoming involved and taking advantage of the publicity that will be created as a result of NGM. This is an excellent example of how we can work together at club, county and national level to begin to address the decline in club membership, which is one of the four key ambitions within the new England Golf strategy.

If you do want to get involved, the key task for your club at this stage is to decide what offers or promotions you would wish to advertise on the NGM website during May 2014. As already mentioned, further information will follow in January/February 2014 that will explain how this will be managed. In the meantime, if you wish to discuss how to design and shape your offer in preparation for this please do not hesitate to contact one of our regional or county development officers.

The BCLGA Executive has arranged for a Safeguarding and Protecting Children (SPC) Workshop to be held at Beaconsfield Golf Club on Monday 10th March from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.  The course will be run by Andrew Willems, the England Golf Regional Development Officer (South East Region).
The minimum number of delegates for the workshop is 8, with the maximum being 20.  There are spaces available on the course for anyone involved with junior golf who feel that it would be beneficial.  The course is co-ordinated through the County Golf Partnership, who have placed an advertisement on the "Children in Golf" website.

An update on the situation with the England Golf Strategic Plan.  The original intention was that the final plan would be approved at the England Golf General Meeting in February and the launch of the Plan would be on 2nd April 2014.  There is still discussion required before the Plan can be adopted and so this timetable has been postponed.
The following item is taken from the England Golf website:-
" England Golf is currently undertaking the development of a new and ambitious strategic plan, which will enable us to build on the recent merger, deliver the outcomes within the Whole Sport Plan agreement with Sport England and build on the excellent work which is taking place to develop golf at all levels all around the country.
It will address some of the challenges the sport is facing and present ways to maximise some of the opportunities that are also in front of us.

It will be a plan that should inform the future work of the board, committees and staff of England Golf, the county unions, associations and county golf partnerships, the clubs and volunteers. It will also help to shape the way we work with national and local partners including but not limited to golf course owners and managers, county sports partnerships and other local partners.

This plan is being developed in consultation with our national partners and the many stakeholders that make up England Golf. In the first phase of consultation there were over 500 responses made via an electronic survey and these responses showed overwhelming support for the development of this plan:

  • 94% of respondents felt it was important or very important for there to be a single plan for England Golf
  • 89% of respondents said they were likely or very likely to play their role in its delivery.

Further consultation has also taken place at a national and 40 county workshops.

As a result of this initial consultation the second draft of the plan was developed and we undertook a further consultation period that ran from mid-November 2013 to 13 January 2014 and again received enthusiastic feedback with over 600 respondents providing their views via an online survey.

Using these responses along with feedback sent directly to us, a third draft of the plan has been produced and is avaible for download from the bottom of this page.  This is still work in process and we will be liaising closely with our county unions and associations during March and April with the aim of receiving endorsement for the final strategy at the voting members meeting in July.

We would be happy to receive any contribution to this final consultation process and would value any feedback you wish to provide.  Your views and any queries regarding the Strategic Plan can be made by emailing strategy@englandgolf.org.
