WEBSITE HACKED -  26 August 2010

The BCLGA website has been hacked into on two occasions in the past two weeks by Muslim extremists. On the first occasion the site was up and running again later the same day. To avoid further problems arrangements were made to make the site more secure.

Unfortunately before this work could be completed the site was hacked into again on 23rd August. The site was then not accessible until all necessary work was done to upgrade the system. It is now up and running again – some of the recent additions to the content of the site have been lost, but these will be re-loaded as soon as possible.

The BCLGA website was not the only one to be targetted, millions of other sites have been similarly affected. The website administrators would like to thank the technical team who look after the site for all their hard work in getting the site working again at the earliest opportunity.

We can only apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank those who reported the problem to members of the Exec. Without the website it was difficult to let people know that we were aware that the problem existed and it was being sorted out!

News has just been received as to the Juniors who have qualified for the Abraham Trophy, which is held each year on the day immediately prior to the English Girls' Championships.

This year it will be played on 26th July at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, which is the venue for the Under 15 and Under 13 Girls' Championships. It is an 18 hole strokeplay competition where girls qualify on how much they have dropped their handicap in one year.

Congratulations to Luan Skeates from The Buckinghamshire who won the area qualifier and now goes on to play at the Abraham Trophy Final - she will receive an area trophy after the final.

Lucy Matthews (Ellesborough) was 7th in our area and just missed out in qualifying for a place in the final. Abigail and Kirsty Kennedy (Mentmore), Alice Kolowski and Kim Squire (Ellesborough) and Chloe Li (Woburn) also entered but the standard was the best it has ever been and so they also do not progress to the final.

All matches in the Winter League have now been played. Well done to all concerned for completing the League within the time period. The weather certainly played its part in the competition as some of the matches were postponed on several occasions due to course closure.

Congratulations to Woburn on winning the League with 25 points, 7 ahead of runners-up Ellesborough. The full results and final tables can be found in the "Competitions - Leagues" section.

The Draw for the Bucks Shield was made at yesterday's Delegates' Meeting. The first Round matches are due to be played between 28th March and 2nd May. The competition reaches its conclusion on 3rd September when the semi-finals and final are played at The Lambourne Club.

This year, for the first time, when all the matches in a Round have been played, there is a re-draw to determine the next round opponents. The first of the two Clubs "out of the hat" has the Home venue. In order to retain Home advantage the Home Club must contact their opponent to offer dates by a set date - after this date whichever Club makes initial contact may claim the Home advantage (please see the Rules for clarification).

For the first Round Draw, the dates for the Rounds and the Rules, go to the "Competitions - Knockouts" section.

A reminder of the position regarding Distance Measuring Devices:
At the B.C.L.G.A. Executive Meeting on 3rd September 2008 it was agreed to allow the use of GPS and other measuring devices in competitions:-
"In competitions a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect her play (e.g. gradient, windspeed, temperature, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used."
N.B. This new ruling came into effect for competitions starting from 1st October 2009. Their use is not allowed in the County Championships or County Week or ANY JUNIOR COMPETITIONS.
Also a reminder that as from 1st January 2010 EWGA has decided to allow the use of distance measuring devices in EWGA medals, Australian Spoons and the PING four ball better ball tournament at club level and where there is a local rule in place allowing the use of DMDs.
However, EWGA will continue not to allow DMDs for all regional* and national competitions.

EWGA NEWS OF HARRIET - 3 February 2010

Well done to Harriet Beasley who is mentioned in despatches in the EWGA Newsletter, published on 2nd February. Complete with photograph the following article appears:-

" Woburn's Harriet Beasley was pipped on the 20th hole in the final of the First Flight competition of the Doherty/Jones Challenge Cup tournament at Coral Ridge Country Club, Fort Lauderdale - the third event in Florida's Orange Blossom Tour for lady amateurs. Harriet was among a group of Sterling University students playing on the tour. "

The only disappointing part of Harriet's trip was the fact that the first half was spent in waterproofs! Harriet is now back in England, about to return to Sterling for the second semester of her second year at the University.

Due to the prolonged spell of bad weather the following directive was sent on 14th January to the players still involved in the Winter Foursomes knockout competition:-

" The adverse weather conditions have resulted in course closures across the county. Even if the snow melts within the next day or two, which is not forecast, opening the courses may be delayed due to the bad/dangerous ground conditions. An extension will therefore be granted to round 3 which was due to be played by January 19th. This extension is limited to ten days from the day one of the courses where you are members reopens for play. Well draining courses on lower ground may be open several days before those on higher ground and this may mean a change in venue but Executive believe it is paramount to play the matches as soon as the weather and ground conditions permit. "

The decision has been made to cancel the County Lunch which was due to be held tomorrow at Harewood Downs. Today's snowfall means that we have been finally beaten by the weather.

As there was some respite in the weather at the weekend and beginnining of the week, it was hoped that the Lunch could go ahead and plans were made for the car park to be cleared of snow today. The new snow, which is still falling has had the final say.

The practicalities of trying to arrange another date are such that the Lunch is cancelled rather than postponed to another date.

For those who were waiting for the County Handbook, which would have been distributed at the Lunch today, for the details and Entry Forms of all the Competitions and Meetings for the year ahead, do remember that all this information is already available on the website.

Help is required for the County Pre-handicap Girls' Events. The good news is that the Junior Pre-handicap section has grown but this means that with the increase in numbers attending, the Junior Committee are seeking a helping hand from lady members on an ad hoc basis, to assist with supervision on Par 3 Courses giving advise on rules and etiquette.

USE OF DMD's IN EWGA MEDALS - 12 December 2009

EWGA have relaxed their ruling with regard to the use of Distance Measuring Devices. Below is the text of the statement that was issued by EWGA and appears on their website:-

Distance Measuring Devices in EWGA Events

At a recent meeting of the Golf Forum, the R&A and home unions (apart from the EGU) continued to oppose the use of distance measuring devices (DMDs) in their competitions.
At EWGA we are aware that the decision not to allow DMDs in all EWGA competitions has caused a number of problems, especially at club level.
We know that many clubs have already adopted a local rule to allow the use of DMDs in club competitions but their women have not been allowed to use the devices in EWGA medals.
EWGA has decided to allow the use of distance measuring devices in EWGA medals, Australian Spoons and the PING four ball better ball tournament at club level and where there is a local rule in place allowing the use of DMDs.
However, EWGA will continue not to allow DMDs for all regional* and national competitions and we continue to advise counties strongly not to allow the use of DMDs in their competitions.
The change will take effect from 1 January 2010.
Emma Lowe (
Championship Manager)
* This will include Medal Finals, regional and national finals of the Australian Spoons and the PING Plate and Grand finals

The BCLGA will continue to allow the use of DMDs in the county knockout competitions and Leagues. They will not be allowed in the County Championships or in County week.

- 7 December 2009

Below are items of news extracted from the latest issue of EWGA's monthly electronic newsletter:-

The handicap Divisions have been abandoned for the English Seniors' Close and Strokeplay Championships for 2010 - all competitors will play in one field. There will still be handicap Divisions in the Regional events.

The Senior Women's Regional Tournaments are 36 hole events held over two days and are open to any ladies over 50 with a handicap of 20 or better. Details of the four Regional events are:
-  Midlands:  Thursday/Friday, 8 - 9 July at Walmley G.C., Warwicks.
-  Southern:  Wednesday/Thursday, 11 - 12 August at South Winchester G.C., Hants.
-  Northern:  Thursday/Friday, 2 - 3 September at Warrington G.C., Cheshire
-  Brenda KIng Foursomes:  Wednesday/Thursday, 29 - 30 September at Gainsborough, Lincs.
N.B. There is no limit to the number of tournaments a player may enter. On-line entry via the EWGA website will be available from February:-  www.englishwomensgolf.org

It's official! Girls' golf is getting better and that is reflected in the new handicap limits for the English U15 & U13 Championships. From next year the limit for entry to the U15's will be 18.4 (previously 20.4) while the limit for the U13's will be 20.4 (formerly 24.4). The Championships will be played at Market Rasen, Lincs., from 27th to 29th July.

There is a new look for the Englsh Girls' (Under 18) Campionships. The 2010 Championships will trial a new format when it changes to a 72-hole strokeplay competition. Traditionally it was played over 5 days and consisted of two rounds of strokeplay qualifying, followed by matchplay in two flights. Next year's Championships at Seacroft, Lincs, will be played over 3 days from 27th July. The entire field will play 18 holes on each of the first two days before a cut is made for the final day's 36 holes. The change reflects the growing interest in strokeplay among young players, many of whom are planning careers in professional golf. The U15 & U13 Championships have been strokeplay events for the last 4 years.
